In 1920, the
fifteen-hundredth anniversary of the death of Saint Jerome, the
"Greatest Doctor" in the exposition of the Scriptures, Pope Benedict
XV issued an encyclical, praising the life and labors of the Saint,
citing many examples of his love for the Bible and the principles he
used to understand it. The Pope reaffirmed and clarified further
some points of Providentissimus Deus,
"which We desire to apply more precisely still to the present needs
of the Church."
St.
Jerome: Born 347 Died 419 - Translator of the Bible from Hebrew and
Greek into Latin. Doctor of the Church and Father of the Church.
Spent many years as a monk living in solitude in the desert.
St.
Jerome's Feast Day is September 30th.
